Department de Santa Cruz

The department of Santa Cruz de la Sierra is located in the eastern part of Bolivia (17°45', South, 63°14', West) at 416 m above sea level. It is part of the province of Andres Ibañez and the capital of the department (state) of Santa Cruz.

Is the biggest department in Bolivia, one of the cities with the biggest demographic growth in South America and the area with more economical growth for its agriculture, agro-industry and its important touristic attractions.

CITY TOUR + GUEMBE BIOCENTER

We will show you the best touristic attractions of city’s old area, where history mixes with an urban development, we visit the Chiquitano and Catedralicio museums, then the residential areas and the handy crafts center, La Recova, the jewelry store Arte Campo, where you can find the famous “Bolivianita” unique semi precious stone existing only in Bolivia.

We visit the Rio Pirai (Pirai River) cabins and the Urubo hills.

Finally we go to the Guembe Biocenter, an ecological paradise where we can enjoy a delicious lunch of international or typical meals.

Then we walk in paths of the top of the trees height, to get to a gigantic cage where we can find more than 100 species of butterflies. At the end of our tour we enjoy a diverse collection of orchids in its "orquideario", natural pools, lagoons, kayaking, horse riding and carriages.

DZ4 –Samaipata Fortress (Full Day)

Samipata. Is a small and picturesque town 120 km. from Santa Cruz. This trip will take to a scenic route, where you can enjoy the landscape that becomes more interesting by the minute. Not far from Samaipata, it is possible to find one of the most important archeological monuments from de pre- Columbian time: The Fortress (El Fuerte) this archeological site has been declared Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO.

Many hypothetical explanations about its origin came out for this mysterious area. Supposedly this Fortress is the work of the pre – Inca Amazon culture “Cane” and after that it was used as an advanced city by the Incas y finally the Spanish colonists turn it into a Fortress.

08:00. Departure to Samaipata for 3 hours on paved road. 20 km. After we arrive to Samaipata we visit some caves, where you can enjoy waterfalls, an invitation to a bath, we continue until we get to Samaipata, characterized for its fresh climate, shows the traditional settles of Santa Cruz valleys, we visit the Archeological and anthropological Museum, to admire archeological samples from excavations in the site of the Fortress and the regional around.

Refugio Los Volcanes is located in the southern part of Amboro National Park and is roughly a one and a half hours drive from the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Tucked away in a deep valley, Los Volcanes offers spectacular views of sandstone rock cliffs as well as the tropical forests which surround the Sanctuary. There are also trails offering opportunities to appreciate the flora and fauna.

CHE’S ROUTE: SANTA CRUZ, VALLEGRANDE, LA HIGUERA – SANTA CRUZ


Day 1.  Santa Cruz – Samaipata – Vallegrande>

Departure from Santa Cruz to Vallegrande south west direction, on the old highway to Cochabamba, on the way we visit the Samaipata Fortress, pre-Inca ruins declared Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO.

We talk to a lady who actually knew Che Guevara, when he robbed a truck looking for medicines for him on the way to Samaipata, a confrontation occurred there for a few hours, and he could not accomplish his goal.

We have lunch in the best restaurant of the area, then visit museums and handy craft stores. Later on, continue our journey on the beautiful valleys of Santa Cruz, we will see lots of cactus and then arrive to Vallegrande. Dinner and overnight in the hotel.

Day 2. Vallegrande – Pucara – La Higuera – Vallegrande >

Breakfast, departure to La Higuera,  we cross the towns of Guadalupe Agua de Oro, where an image of  Virgin Mary is carved in relief in a colored stone, that was founded by a lady of the area, Mrs. Natividad Álvarez 57 years ago (optional visit).

In the same place, a few kilometers of our way, we can visit the Andean condor’s nests site, optional visit.  Then we visit the town of Pucara and carry on to La Higuera, we visit the school where el Che spent the last day of his life (now museum). Lunch and visit the gully of Churo (last place of combat of the guerrilla).

Return to Vallegrande and overnight in the hotel.

Day 3. Vallegrande – Santa Cruz>


Breakfast, visit the hospital of Malta, we meet the lady who washed his body, cover the landing strip where the Commander body was found with his comrades.

Return to Santa Cruz, arrival approximately at 7:00 PM

Department of Cochabamba “La Llajta”
Cochabamba is one of the nine component departments of Bolivia. It has an area of 55,631 km². Its population, in the 2001 census, was 1,455,711. Its capital is the city of Cochabamba.

Country side excursions in Cochabamba:
DC5 - Incachaka/Incallajta Ruins (Full Day) “Cochabamba”

140kms from Cochabamba are the Archaeological ruins of Incallajta, situated in the canton of Pocona at 2,900 m.a.s.l. By the characteristics Incallajta is one of the most noted forts build by the Incas with the idea to stop the advance of the Chiringuano and Yuracare warriors. You can notice in the architectonic site the monumental features 78m long and 25,50m wide, roofed, with 2 water slopes, the utility of this building has not been cleared, although many investigators say it was a temple. On the highest point of the terrain you can observe a lonely building that we call “Torreon”. On this visit we will see the architectural complex Pajcha Huayqú, the temple Colque Wayrachina, and Machajmarca river. Enjoy a guided tour to the inside of the “Torreon”. We will also visit the picturesque village of Pocona and the museum. In the afternoon, return to Cochabamba

DC6 - High Valleys Tarata, Huayculli, Cliza, Villa Rivero, Arani and Punata Cochabamba
Tarata is a Colonial Village, where colonial history and architecture is the principal frame of this trip, we’ll see the main square, San Pedro’s church, the consistorial Palace, the mayors tower, and walk thru the streets until Melgarejo’s bridge, a visit to the Franciscan Monastery of San Jose of Tarata. Visit an artisan’s house and have the opportunity to buy crafts woven from wool. See the process and laboration of chicha. We continue towards Wuayculli, a village dedicated to the fabrication of ceramic, we’ll get a demonstration from a master craftsman. Cliza, Ocureña and Villa Ribero are known for their rug manufactures, we’ll see a craftsman at work. In Arani we visit the sanctuary of the Virgin La Bella. Return back to Cochabamba through Punata, a village famous for their elaboration of chicha, typical beverage from the Cochabamba Valleys, here we’ll be able to taste this drink.

Country side excursion in Cochabamba:

One of Bolivia’s most beautiful regions is Chapare, situated in the north-west area of Cochabamba, It’s subtropical and tropical climate makes it ideal to appreciate the changes in the vegetation as you descend from the cordilleras to the Rain Forest, see the rivers: Espiritu Santo, Chimoré, Chapare, Ichilo which flow into the Mamore and into the biggest river in the world: The Amazonas. You can see strange flowers, orchids in exotic colors, butterflies, hummingbirds. Chapare is the perfect place for adventure sports or just to relax and breathe fresh air and enjoy nature.

DC7 - Low Valleys Chapare Cochabamba
The first day you can choose from visiting the Carrasco National Park, or trekking in the rain forest. Lunch included.
The second day, from Puerto San Francisco go boating down the Chapare river for 6 hours where you’ll see, birds in their natural habitat, the scenery, if we’re lucky some animals.
